I'm just glad that I don't have to have many PS3 games this year. I'm pretty much looking forward to getting CoD5 and a PS Eye. I might have to get Res 2. But serously, I think all I need is just LBP for creativity and party fun, BioShock for a RE4-like FPS high, and CoD5 for online multiplayer FPS especially co-op mode. It's a good thing that I don't have to get a lot for 2008 because I want to start saving up for double copies of RE5: CE next year if that's possible.

I'd figure I'd try to come back and haunt my good 'ol hunting grounds for a little bit, a year's worth of all nighters and energy drinks (thanks college) has made me a little crazy.

This is Nefe by the way, though no longer called so.

Hey, Mister Flannery. Guess we'll have to call you MF for short. Pretty cool acronym nickname, methinks.

Kit told me about what happened yesterday afternoon. Is your PSN tag Mister_Flannery with the underscore? Have you tried out the ModNation Racers demo yet? No... knowing you, it's probably already in your possession. Heh. >_>

Tch, college. All-nighters and 5-Hour Energy drinks for me. I'm done with that bs after this summer. I have a year left in the program, but I've taken all three video courses and there is nothing left for me. Quite honestly, the only things that made me stay were the video courses, but since that's all over with, there's no more point. When I realized there wasn't much more to do in the final video course last semester, my motivation was at an all-time low for everything. My grades will only suffer if I continue the program.

Thus, at this point, I will go to a 6-month long film school in the fall. But if it's too expensive or still involves a classroom setting, then fuck that. That's only to assuage my mother and other people who claim having a degree is paramount. Well, having a piece of paper doesn't mean jack squat if my heart ain't in it (VCT). I don't want to do videos that market things, I want to create entertaining films. Anyway, I'm currently in San Diego fulfilling my third and final co-op assignment at BGSU. I only am doing it because it's a video editor position. I get to learn hands-on with professional cameras and other aspects such as green screen and talent casting. But really, the only important things are getting involved in the film(maker) community, building contacts through the position, and so I can say I worked as a video editor on my resume.

What are you doing in college?

Hey Digitus,

Yes, my PSN handle is Mister_Flannery with the underscore, while my Xbox handle is Mister Flannery without an underscore.

I actually haven't gotten Mod Nation Racers yet, nor have I played the demo.  I do want it though, but I probably will not get it until after I get rid of some of the games from my stack.

As for college:  I just finished up my first year working on a degree in game development.  I'm still working on my core classes though, so the closest I've gotten to actually learning about game development was the computer applications class (Photoshop, Illustrator, Flash, After Effects, and Dreamweaver in that order) that I just finished up the other day.  Instead, I've been focusing on the basics, such as drawing courses and 2D and 3D design as well as color theory.  None of it is especially hard work, but it's just time consuming to put out work that looks good, hence the numerous all-nighters.  Either way though, it's a million times better than high school, worst four years of my life that was.

Hmm, sounds like my first year cuz I've used those Adobe programs. What are your thoughts on the Pen tool in Illustrator? I know what you mean about putting out work that looks presentable. What about computer science?

The pen tool is nice and all, but what really caught my attention was the pencil tool.  I used the pen tool very rarely, only to get a curve that I just couldn't seem to get when using the pencil tool.  But then again, I was mostly tracing over an image so I guess the pencil tool just makes more sense in that context.

Because I'm going to a more visual design college, there is a lot less emphasis on programming and understanding computers, and more on just learning the tools to make visual pieces.  I believe the extent that my college teaches in regards to computer science are a couple of C+ courses, and that's pretty much it.

I absolutely hate the Illustrator Pen tool. Nothing is more counterintuitive than that in Adobe applications. If I wanted to change the curve/arc of a line between two points, I always had to Undo the last action in order to be able to see the handle points for the main points. Bugged the shit out of me in 2007 and still does to this day. I mean, I'm not using Illustrator at all for my own endeavors, but when I had to use it for assignments... Yeah.

Dude, it exactly sounds like you are majoring in VCT (Visual Communication Technology). So, you say you are working to get a degree in game development? Is that a broad field pertaining to mediums such as video games, cell phone games, and Internet Flash games? What exactly do you want to do? Design graphics to be used in games? Design visual pieces that promote games? Develop the plot and ideas for games? I'm sure this doesn't really apply judging from what you said, but do you want to program games or parts of games? All of the above?

How many years are you expected to spend at the college? Core courses, general education courses... *sighs* Well, the important thing is, how are you enjoying college as it is now? Anything that you love performing? I understand if you're not sure about most of my questions and you're just trying things out to get a better understanding of what it is that you wish to do.

Here's a link to my college and my major:
http://www.scad.edu/interactive-design-and-game-development/bfa.cfm#programButtons

As you can see, this major has two branches:  a game art and design branch and an interactive design branch.  I'm going to start following the Game Art and Design branch once Fall Quarter rolls around halfway through September.

In other words, I have not taken a single course pertaining to my major, yet.  The Advanced Computer Applications course (CMPA 110) falls under the general education category, and is something that everybody has to take (or CMPA 100 if you don't have a art-program heavy major).

Ultimately, I intend to become a project manager/director.  As for years, not sure yet.  Even though I just finished my first year, I'm technically a sophomore now since I eliminated two quarters worth of classes with AP credit.  Not to mention I'm considering pursuing my masters right after finishing up my BFA.

So you can't really answer the question if you are enjoying it since you're wading through the gen ed crap first? Guess we'll know more later.

Well, see you around, MF. You too, DP.

I didn't take a traditional art class in high school at all, and still got accepted.  My drawing skills were abysmal when I entered SCAD, but one of the first classes you take is a drawing class and they get whipped into shape.  Now, I'm decent, not great or even good, but still acceptable.  You should at least apply, they don't judge you solely on artistic merit during the application phase.

So you can't really answer the question if you are enjoying it since you're wading through the gen ed crap first? Guess we'll know more later.

Well, see you around, MF. You too, DP.

I'm enjoying the general college workflow much more than high school.  Here at least I have an understanding of how this applies to my future career.  Basically, I'm enjoying my general education (because it isn't made up of only English or History), and look forward to my major course of study.

Any chance that you two will stay for a while?

Can't say for Dark Phoenix, but I'll probably pop in every once in a while.  Won't be as active as the good 'ol days though.
